GUIDE TO ADVERTISING MAJORS AND PROGRAMS

Advertising is a highly competitive, creative field, where knowledge of computer design, and an eye for the aesthetic will get you far. But with an advertising business degree you will be able to get the training you need to become an advertising manager, an advertising account executive, or an art or creative director. An advertising business degree will provide you with both the business and creative skills to plan and direct ads for businesses, and to show that you are both business savvy, as well as in touch with today's trends.

Advertising is an important part of business, as it is one of the key ways to promote products and services. Advertising mangers or advertising account executives direct and supervise a staff, or team, in planning and carrying out an advertising campaign. This includes the management of both the account, creative, and media services provided by a campaign team.

Advertising art directors, or creative directors are in charge of a creative team that produces the artwork or ad campaigns for magazines, advertisements or products. A creative team can consist of artists, graphic designers, photographers, and copywriters, along with a production staff. Art directors make sure that each of these workers produce and complete their work on time and to the client's satisfaction. Art directors play a major role in the development of a project by making decisions on the visual elements of a campaign, and by giving the final say on the selection of models, art, props, colors, and other elements. Art directors also often do some of the artwork themselves, however, most of their time is spent doing supervisory and administrative duties.

Both advertising managers and advertising art directors often find employment in large advertising firms where their duties can be broken down more specifically into account management, creative directing, and media directing. Many art directors also pursue employment with magazines and newspapers doing layout design, in public relations, and in web design. Also, over 50% of art directors are self-employed or do freelance work.
