NUTRITION EDUCATION & TRAINING
What is Nutrition and where can I study Nutrition?
You can study nutrition at a number of different culinary colleges and culinary institutes. Some traditional colleges also offer this type of culinary education, but you may find it tends towards the more academic rather than vocational in nature. Most culinary schools and colleges require a background in a life science such as biology although chemistry and maybe math would come in useful too. You might learn about the three basic food groups: protein, fat and carbohydrate. You might also learn how we need different ratios of these elements in our diet to be healthy. These optimal ratios change during our lives e.g. as babies and infants we generally need a far higher proportion of fat than we need as adults. You might learn about the specific needs of the elderly, or those required by pregnant women or nursing mothers. You should also learn about trace elements, vitamins and minerals and how these help to keep diseases at bay and our tissues strong and healthy. You might also study which food groups are particularly high in certain minerals or vitamins e.g. leafy green vegetables being a good source of iron or oily fish being a good source of omega 3 fatty acids.
What can I do with Training in Nutrition?
Depending on the final level of your qualification, you might find work as a nutritionist working with other health professionals. You may advise families on limited income how to shop and cook more healthily. You might decide to go into industry and work with 'ready meal' manufacturers or you could work in a hospital, care home or even a premature baby unit.
